MINUTES OF MEETING BETWEEN THE PRESIDENT OF THE NIGERIA OLYMPIC COMMITTEE AND THE JAPANESE ASSISTANT MINISTER/DIRECTOR-GENERAL, AFRICAN AFFAIRS DEPARTMENT, MS. TAKAHASHI MISAKO

The discussions focused on the important role of sport in bringing the people and institutions of both countries closer, as well as on opportunities for cooperation in sports development and support for Nigerian National Sports Federations.

The NOC President highlighted the important role that Japan could play in supporting the development of sport in Nigeria. He proposed that Japanese organisations and companies operating in Nigeria consider supporting local sporting championships and other competitions through sponsorship. He noted that such support would provide valuable assistance to Nigerian sports federations while also creating stronger partnerships between Japanese companies and the Nigerian sporting community.

The President further encouraged Japanese stakeholders to consider supporting sports federations of their choice, particularly those requiring assistance to strengthen their programmes, activities and development initiatives.

Ms. Takahashi Misako welcomed the proposals and expressed interest in the areas discussed during the meeting.

1. ENGAGEMENT WITH THE JAPANESE OLYMPIC COMMITTEE (JOC)

Ms. Takahashi indicated that she would communicate with the Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC) regarding the meeting and the issues discussed, with a view to exploring possible areas of cooperation and ensuring strong support and backing from the Japanese Government.

The proposed engagement with the JOC would provide an opportunity to identify practical areas of collaboration between the Nigerian and Japanese Olympic movements, particularly in the areas of sports development, technical cooperation, capacity building and support to sports federations.

2. AFRO-ASIA MEETING IN NAGOYA, JAPAN

The upcoming Afro-Asia meeting in Nagoya, Japan, was also discussed. The Japanese side indicated that there could be an opportunity for a further meeting with the President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee during the event, with a view to deepening discussions and exploring additional areas of cooperation between both sides.

Such an engagement would provide an opportunity to follow up on the issues raised during the meeting and further strengthen Nigeria-Japan relations through sport.

3. SPORTS FOR TOMORROW INITIATIVE

The meeting also discussed Japan’s Sports for Tomorrow initiative, particularly the possibility of providing sporting equipment and other forms of assistance to Nigerian sports federations that are in need of such support.

Ms. Takahashi acknowledged the significant need for sporting equipment in Nigeria and expressed support for exploring possible avenues through which assistance could be provided under the initiative.

The NOC President welcomed the possibility of such support, noting that the provision of appropriate equipment would contribute significantly to the development of athletes and the improvement of training and competition opportunities for Nigerian sports federations.

4. CONTINUED NIGERIA-JAPAN SPORTS COOPERATION

The meeting underscored the importance of maintaining regular communication and engagement between the Nigeria Olympic Committee, the Japanese Olympic Committee and other relevant organisations and institutions in both countries.

Further discussions will be required to identify specific and practical areas where Japan can support the development of sport in Nigeria, including technical cooperation, sports equipment, sponsorship, capacity building and institutional partnerships.

CONCLUSION

The meeting provided a valuable opportunity for the Nigeria Olympic Committee and the Japanese Government to discuss practical avenues for strengthening bilateral relations through sport.

Key areas discussed included support for Nigerian sports federations, sponsorship opportunities involving Japanese companies operating in Nigeria, the provision of sporting equipment, engagement with the Japanese Olympic Committee, and continued cooperation through the Sports for Tomorrow initiative.

The proposed follow-up with the Japanese Olympic Committee, together with further discussions on the Sports for Tomorrow initiative and other areas of mutual interest, will provide a solid basis for continuing the dialogue and identifying concrete opportunities for Japanese support to Nigerian sport.

The NOC looks forward to maintaining close engagement with the Japanese Government, the JOC and other Japanese stakeholders with a view to developing a stronger and mutually beneficial Nigeria-Japan sports partnership.
