Nigeria Olympic Committee Athletes Commission
The Chairman of the Athletes Commission of Nigeria, Olumide Oyedeji, has expressed satisfaction with the successful conclusion of a two-day athletes' forum held at the VIP Lounge of the MKO Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.

The forum brought together 45 athletes’ representatives to deliberate on issues affecting Nigerian athletes, with particular emphasis on improving welfare programmes for active competitors and preparing athletes for life after retirement.
Oyedeji commended the participants for their contributions, describing the gathering as an important platform for discussing the challenges facing athletes and exploring practical solutions to improve their welfare and career development.
One of the major areas of discussion was the need to strengthen welfare support for active athletes. Participants considered ways to improve the conditions of athletes, enhance their career prospects and ensure that their concerns receive greater attention from relevant sports authorities.
The forum also focused on retirement planning, educating active athletes on the importance of preparing financially, professionally and psychologically for life beyond competitive sports.
Athletes often face significant challenges when transitioning from active competition to retirement, particularly when they have not established alternative sources of income or developed skills for life outside sports. The discussions therefore highlighted the importance of early preparation, financial discipline and career development. The two-day engagement held on Monday and Tuesday provided an opportunity for athletes’ representatives to exchange ideas, share experiences and consider strategies for ensuring that athletes’ interests remain central to sports administration and policy decisions.
The forum also underscored the importance of sustained engagement between athletes and sports administrators in developing policies that address the needs of competitors throughout their sporting careers.
Oyedeji’s leadership of the Athletes Commission is expected to remain focused on strengthening athletes’ representation, promoting better welfare standards and encouraging initiatives that support athletes both during and after their competitive careers.
The successful conclusion of the forum represents a step towards fostering a more supportive sporting environment in Nigeria, where athlete welfare, career progression and long-term security receive greater attention.
